Is the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS)
the Best Person-Centered Assessment Choice for children/youth and their caregivers?

As helping professionals, selecting the appropriate assessment tool is crucial to providing effective and person-centered care. Many different assessment tools could be considered for this purpose, including the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS). All are valuable in supporting the process of gathering information about children, youth, and their caregivers.

The choice of assessment tool should ultimately depend on context and priorities. If the goal is a quick, efficient screening for behavioral health concerns, many tools can be useful starting points.

For a more thorough person-centered assessment that can be used in diverse settings, including behavioral health, child welfare, or juvenile justice, and captures information relevant to the broader context of the child’s life, the CANS might be the best and preferred option based on the following considerations:

Focus on Strengths: The CANS not only identifies needs but also assesses a child’s resources, assets, and strengths in areas such as relationships, skills, supports, and resources. This strength-based approach is pivotal in person-centered care, as it highlights and builds on the child’s existing abilities. Recognizing strengths alongside needs allows for a balanced and encouraging assessment, promoting resilience and empowerment. The CANS intentionally highlights the strengths that can be leveraged by individuals being assessed to mitigate the identified needs.

Broader Scope: The CANS offers a more comprehensive understanding of the child’s story by covering a wide range of needs, including mental health, education, family functioning, community life, and trauma exposure. This broad perspective ensures that all aspects of a child/youth’s life are considered, by providing a holistic view of their situation and how various factors might influence their well-being. By taking a comprehensive look at the child’s needs in all relevant areas of life, the CANS helps to create more effective and individualized care plans.

Collaborative Planning: Another standout feature of the CANS is its facilitation of communication and collaboration between families, service providers, and the individual receiving care. The tool uses clear and understandable language, making it easier for all parties involved to engage in the planning process. This collaborative approach is at the heart of person-centered care, ensuring that the child and their family are active participants in developing and implementing the care plan through a shared vision.

Flexibility: The CANS offers versions tailored to specific age groups and populations, as well as to jurisdictions (mass customization to match what we offer to what the family and the child need), ensuring that the assessment is relevant and appropriate for the individual being evaluated. This adaptability makes the CANS a versatile tool for diverse settings and populations.

Choosing the right assessment tool can significantly impact the quality of care provided in child and family-serving systems. The CANS is exceptional for its strength-based approach, comprehensive scope, collaborative nature, and flexibility. While other assessment tools have their places in specific contexts, the CANS offers a more holistic and person-centered framework, making it the best choice for supporting the unique strengths and needs of children, youth, and families.

By incorporating the CANS into your practice, you can enhance your ability to provide effective, individualized, and empathic care, ultimately fostering better outcomes for those you serve.
